„Observing a photographer at work, frequently offers a unique insight into their photographic practice and philosophy. In Donovan Wylie: One Day Taking Photographs in Belfast, Peter Mann offers the viewer a rare insight into the working methodology of the celebrated photographer through a series of candid portraits taken one afternoon in 2005 during a walk around North Belfast.
In Mann’s photographs we see Wylie, who was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2010, recording various aspects of Belfast in what one suspects are visual notes for photographs that will be made at a later date; the British military watchtowers; and the iconic murals that proliferate the city; and the urban landscape that is so distinctly Belfast. Frequently we see Wylie holding his camera above his head as he takes his photograph, at other times he carefully examines the images on the digital screen of his camera, or he simply strolls the empty streets with his camera over his shoulder, exploring and contemplating the urban environment before him.
